Things like weighted blankets, heavy lap pads, or weighted plushies actually work due to our biology, not because they are ‘magic’ or ‘placebos’. A few bullet points for the science behind these tools:
- Deep Touch Pressure (DTP): Ever enjoyed a firm, lingering hug (Not me, actually – my brand of autism makes hugs feel incredibly uncomfortable!)? For many people however, a hug can boost serotonin and dopamine levels when applying firm pressure evenly across the body.
- Proprioceptive Feedback: The weight stimulates sensors in our muscles and joints to help the brain understand where the body is in space. This grounding effect reduces anxiety, lowers cortisol, and helps the body physically downregulate.
- Melatonin Regulation: Especially at bedtime, an active shift from an alert state to a relaxed state can encourage the body to increase melatonin production. The release of this hormone makes it easier to fall and stay asleep.
Understanding the biology is only half the puzzle. To see the exact tactile tools I use to build this physical anchor daily, read Part 1.
